Hesburgh Month of Service

Please join us in Pittsburgh and fellow alumni, family and friends around the world during the 4th Annual Hesburgh May Month of Service, honoring former Notre Dame president, Fr. Ted Hesburgh. Family and friends of Notre Dame in addition to students and alums are welcome to join in the projects.

5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: light construction tasks – painting, carpet, drywall, landscaping. All tasks will be simple enough to learn in 20 minutes, and professional instruction and supervision will be provided.

5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Construction work in the library and/or helping to create a garden.
6. Number of Volunteers Needed: Max. of 15
7. What to Bring & Dress: Close-toed shoes/boots, work gloves, clothes you can get dirty. Dress appropriately for weather. Gardening tools and basic construction tools (i.e. hammer).
8. Lunch: Lunch & water provided. You may want a water bottle.
9. Children & families: Project is family friendly though children under 13 cannot do the construction work. They can work on the garden.

1. Non-Profit Organization/Community: Community Design Center of Pittsburgh – Pedal Pittsburgh event
2. Where/Address: We are located downtown, but we need volunteers at the Southside Works, where the start/finish for the event is, and at other locations around the city.
3. Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010 (9:30am – 2:30pm) or Sunday, May 16 (6:30-10:30am) or Sunday May 16 (2:00-4:00pm)
4. Time for Project: See times above with dates
5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Volunteers would help out with pre-registration packet pick-up on the 15th. There will be a few locations around the city for this. On the 16th, the day of the event, volunteers would help with registration, at rest stops, being course marshals, cleaning up after lunch, reloading the truck at the end of the day, etc.
6. Number of Volunteers Needed: No min. or max.
7. What to Bring & Dress: They should dress casually, and volunteers for the 16th should dress for whatever the weather conditions are as they will be outside the entire time. Volunteers on the 13 – 15 may or may not be outside.
8. Lunch: Lunch is provided on all of the days. Please bring a water bottle or something to drink.
9. Children & families: This project is open to children/families as long as the kids aren’t too young and are supervised.

2. Where/Address: 5877 East Commerce Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15206
3. Date: Saturday, May 15, 2010
4. Time for Project: 9:00am - 3:00pm
5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to assist in building a community garden for Family Resources. Volunteers will be building raised flower beds, filling them with soil/compost and planting some early spring vegetables and sunflowers. Volunteers will also assist in planting flowers as well as planting shrubs and other foliage in other parts of the lot.

7. What to Bring & Dress: They should dress casually, and for whatever the weather conditions are as they may be outside the entire time. May want gardening gloves.

     1) From the Mellon Arena, follow overhead signs to Bigelow Boulevard.
     2) At the third light, bear LEFT onto North Craig Street.
     3) Stay in the left hand lane.
     4) At the next light turn LEFT onto Baum Boulevard.
     5) Proceed about 2.5 miles on Baum into East Liberty.
     6) As you enter Penn Circle, the rear side of PSC will be on your right.
     7) At the stop sign turn RIGHT onto South Beatty Street.
     8) Make an immediate RIGHT onto Commerce Street.
     9) The building is the long red brick building on your right.
     10) Two hour parking is available on the street.

2. Where/Address: South Side Trail at 4th Street (Trailhead Parking at end of 4th Street) (map)
3. Date: Friday, May 21, 2010
4. Time for Project: 5:00 – 8:00pm
5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: removing debris and litter from the riverfront and planting native trees, shrubs, and sunflowers along a new trail segment. (there will be a band/entertainment afterward for volunteers)
6. Number of Volunteers Needed: Max. 30
7. What to Bring & Dress: Please dress appropriately for the task and be prepared for inclement weather. We recommend close-toed shoes or boots, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Absolutely no sandals! Work gloves if you have them or rubber gloves.
8. Lunch: Refreshments (and entertainment afterward) will be provided. Please bring a water bottle or drink.
9. Children & families: This project is open to children and families, but volunteers must be 18 years old to be on the boat without a parent or guardian.

12. Directions/Parking: From downtown, take the Smithfield Street Bridge to Carson St. Make a left onto E. Carson St. Take the 2nd left onto 1sts Street (just past the Exxon Station). Turn right at McKean Street. Take the 3rd left onto 4th Street. Follow to the riverfront (across railroad tracks), and make a right into the trailhead parking lot. We'll gather on the left of the trail, midway down the lot. Look for the Tireless Project banner and table.
13. Donations – We are always in need of buckets and/or woven plastic seed/feed bags (for safely collecting broken glass), snacks/food for volunteers, rubber (i.e. chemical) gloves, and rope. Monetary donations to help cover the cost of food, dumpsters, boat fuel, and tire recycling are also welcome, and we are always looking for bands willing to provide in-kind musical entertainment for our volunteers after the Friday evening cleanups.

5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Flower planting – moving perennial shrubs to the grassy strip near Rt. 65 & tackle clearing out our fence line and creek beds.

7. What to Bring & Dress: Dress casually in long pants or clothes that you can work in high weeds in. Bring work gloves. If you have them and don’t mind, please bring rakes, hoes, weed whackers, pruning saws and shears.
8. Lunch: Lunch & refreshments will be provided. You may want to bring a water bottle or drink.
9. Children & families: Children age 12 and up may participate.

12. Directions/Parking: The grounds of the Motherhouse include Mount Gallitzin Academy (MGA). When you arrive at 1020 State Street in Baden, MGA is at the far right (furthest south) of the grounds/buildings. Please park in the MGA parking lot that is closest to State Street (near Anderson's Candies). The group will meet at 10am under the archway that connects MGA with the Motherhouse Activities building. If you will be arriving later, please call Sister Lynn Szymkiewicz when you arrive on the grounds, and she'll come to meet you.

2. Where/Address: Pennley Gardens, corner of Broad and N. St. Claire Street, East Liberty, behind Pennley Apartments (also known as Garland Park)
3. Date: Sunday, May 23, 2010
4. Time for Project: 1:00 – 4:00pm
5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Reclamation of vacant lots. Clearing the lot of debris, turning the soil, making the soil ready for planting, and planting – most sites will be planted with sunflowers. These projects happen in neighborhoods with large amounts of vacant, blighted land – the work the volunteers do will be with within a larger community plan for the site (to prevent the sites from going back to blighted) and will improve the aesthetics, as well as bring neighbors out for a common cause.
6. Number of Volunteers Needed: 10-20 volunteers
7. What to Bring & Dress: All volunteers MUST wear old clothes – you will get dirty. Long pants are recommended for safety reasons. You will be working outside, in any kind of weather – please dress appropriately. Bring a refillable water bottle.
8. Lunch: Snacks and a jug of water will be provided. We can point the volunteers to a good dinner spot for after the work day.
9. Children & families: There are definitely tasks that can be made appropriate for young children. If there will be kids, we would ask for some prior notice.

12. Directions/Parking: There is a parking lot at the site. From downtown, take Penn Avenue through the city to East Liberty. At Negley Avenue, turn left. Take the first right (a Sunoco will be on your left) on Broad Street into a section of apartments. Take a left at N St Claire Street (second possible turn) into a parking lot. We’ll be working inside the split rail fence.

3. Date: Saturday, June 5, 2010
4. Time for Project: two shifts: 10AM-12PM and 12:30PM-2:30PM (volunteers can select one or both shifts)
5. Type of Work for the Volunteers: Likely will sort and pack medical surplus supplies in preparation for sending the supplies to 9 partner countries
6. Number of Volunteers Needed: Min 4 / Max 12
7. What to Bring & Dress: Volunteers need to be dressed in clothes that they do not mind getting a bit dirty. We also ask that all volunteers wear long pants and closed toe shoes
8. Lunch: Volunteers would need to pring their own lunch/snack/drinks. Typical shifts are usually only 2 hours. We can make arrangements for longer shifts if desired.
9. Children & families: All volunteers have to be over 14 years old. Any volunteer uner 18 must be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers under 18 must have their parent/guardian sign Global Links' volunteer waiver prior to being allowed to volunteer.

Other Related Potential Activities:  The young alumni volunteer group is looking at other options to round out the day on June 5th  i.e. add a dinner event later in the day to raise money for the ND Haiti Program.  Tentatively, having a dinner at a restaurant with music and a Chinese Auction from 4 PM to 7 PM; likely buffet dinner with upfront price.  This is optional for volunteers who want to join in for dinner later.  Maybe a band and possibly a speaker about the ND Haiti program.  Maybe a raffle as well.  All TBD; watch for more info. or let us know if you’re interested
